The Abandonment of the Quran
What happens when to leave the Quran

In this blog, we will talk about a very serious issue, namely the abandonment of the Qur'an. Few people read the Qur'an, and few of those who read the Qur'an study it and stand with its promises so that the call to obedience and deterrence from disobedience may be realized. The Qur'an—which, if God had revealed it to the solid mountains, they would have cracked from fear of God—is read, and the verses of promise and warning are heard. Yet, hard hearts, rigid bodies, and stony eyes persist. No heart softens, no body submits, no eye sheds a tear.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Whoever does not read the Qur'an has abandoned it, whoever reads the Qur'an and does not study it has abandoned it, and whoever studies the Qur'an and does not work with it has abandoned it.”
The phenomenon of abandoning the Qur'an is due to many reasons, including:
1. Sins and transgressions.
2. Leaving Supplication
3. Ignorance of the Arabic language.
4. Abandoning means of understanding.
5. Avoiding books of interpretation.
Sins and Transgressions
One of the penalties of sins is that they divert the heart from health and righteousness to disease and deviation. The Almighty said: "No, but what they used to earn has run over their hearts." (Surah Al-Mutaffifin: 14)
Scholars stated: Sin after sin imprints upon the heart, rendering it unaware and deprived of knowledge. Therefore, Allah Almighty said: “Do they not ponder the Qur'an, or are their hearts locked?” (Surah Muhammad: 24)
Those who want to study the Qur'an should avoid sins and transgressions, especially those related to the tools and means of study: the heart, hearing, tongue, and sight. The Almighty said: "And We have put a veil over their hearts that they may not understand it, and in their ears there is deafness." (Surah Al-An'am: 25)
Imam Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) sat before Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) and read to him. Imam Malik was impressed by his intellect and understanding, saying: "Allah has thrown a light on your heart, so do not extinguish it with the darkness of transgression."
From the above, it is clear that sins and transgressions are among the greatest reasons preventing a person from studying the Holy Qur'an.
Leaving Supplication
Supplication is the believer's weapon in all affairs. The righteous predecessors, when struggling to understand a verse, turned to Allah in supplication, choosing the best times for an answer.
Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hisham ibn Al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) did not initially understand a revelation. He repeatedly read it without comprehension until he supplicated, saying: “O Allah, make me understand.”
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) would always say in his supplication: “O Allah, the teacher of Adam and Ibrahim, teach me. O Allah, the understander of Solomon, make me understand.”
